PLAY DESCRIPTION

2-on-2 Cross-Court Closeouts is a competitive half-court drill that sharpens long closeouts, positioning, and two-man defend-and-attack reads. The offense is rewarded for high-value actions (paint touches, inside-out threes, fouls drawn), while the defense must communicate, cover space, and finish possessions. The twist: any offensive turnover wipes out the unit’s running total, forcing efficient decisions and clean execution.

Setup & Organization

Use one half-court. Place two defenders on the right side: one in the baseline corner with a ball, one at right wing (foul-line extended). Place two offensive players mirrored on the left side: one in the left corner, one at left wing. The corner defender starts each rep with the ball. Run two four-minute segments so each team plays one full stint on offense and one on defense.

Step-by-Step Progression

The corner defender passes straight up the sideline to the wing defender. As the wing defender immediately slings a firm cross-court pass to the offensive wing, the corner defender sprints a long cross-court closeout to arrive on the catch. The wing defender drops hard to the nail to protect the lane and be ready to recover to the corner.

On the catch, the offensive wing is live. He can shoot, drive, or swing to the corner. The moment the corner touches the ball, it becomes a live 2-on-2 possession. Play without ball screens or DHOs to emphasize spacing, drive-and-kick, and shot selection. Defenders communicate, contain the first touch, stunt and recover, and finish with a contest and rebound. Reset quickly into the next rep with the same entry (defenders initiate the pass sequence each time).

Scoring

Only the offensive unit scores during its four-minute stint. Made three, paint layup, or drawn shooting foul = 3 points. Made mid-range = 1 point. Any offensive turnover at any time resets that unit’s running score to zero for the current stint. Highest total at the horn wins the segment; switch roles and repeat.

Coaching Points

Close out to arrive on the catch—chop late, high hands, chest over hips. Second defender owns the nail and the corner—stunt, then sprint on airtime. Offense prioritizes inside-out threes and strong paint finishes over contested mid-range. Keep dribbles purposeful; move the ball early on help, play off two feet on drives, and shoot from rhythm windows. Tempo matters: reset instantly and maintain pressure with each rep.

Variations

Flip sides to train both directions. Defense-scoring variant (defender +1 per stop; defensive foul resets to zero). Award a bonus point for an inside-out catch-and-shoot three created by a paint touch. Add a :10 shot clock for pace. For advanced groups, allow a single off-ball flare or backdoor call on the weak side after the first pass.
