PLAY DESCRIPTION

Overview:

Baseline out-of-bounds play designed to create a lob dunk or layup for 5 after a cross back screen, with 4 as a safety valve to keep the play alive.

Why It Works
The curl cut by 2 shifts the defense and clears space. As 3 sets a back screen for 5, the defense is forced to guard two simultaneous actions — the lob to 5 and the lift of 4 to the slot — making help rotations late.

Key Teaching Points

  • 2 must cut shoulder-to-shoulder off 5 to force the defense to react.

  • 3’s back screen on 5 must be physical and well-timed for the lob.

  • 2 must deliver a precise lob pass, high and away from help.

  • If the lob isn’t open, 4 must be ready to catch and flow into secondary action.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • Align in a box: 4 ball-side block, 5 ball-side elbow, 3 weak block, 2 weak elbow, with 1 inbounding.

  • 2 cuts shoulder-to-shoulder off 5 and curls into the ball-side short corner to receive the inbound.

  • 4 lifts quickly to the slot.

  • 3 sets a cross back screen for 5.

  • 5 dives hard to the rim for the lob from 2 (primary option).

  • If denied, 2 swings to 4 in the slot to reset and play opposite.
