PLAY DESCRIPTION

Setup and Organization

This is a live 5-on-5 drill run with a visible 24-second clock, ideally a shot clock in the gym. If unavailable, the coach can use a stopwatch and call out the time. The offensive team can start in any set, entry, or restriction the coach chooses, while the defensive unit begins by shooting a free throw on the opposite end, flowing into the possession to simulate game conditions.

Step-by-Step Progression

The offense attacks live while the defense must guard for the full 24 seconds. If the offense takes a shot and the defense secures the rebound, it counts as a stop, but play continues with the offense retaining the ball for the remaining time on the clock. For example, a defensive rebound at 12 seconds left means the defense must reset and guard the next action for the remaining 12 seconds. If a turnover is forced, the same rule applies, with the offense inbounding the ball where appropriate. The defense must remain engaged and connected throughout, regardless of outcomes within the clock.

Scoring

A defensive stop is only complete if the team defends successfully for the full 24 seconds without fouling, allowing a score, or giving up an offensive rebound. If any of those occur, the clock resets and the defense starts again. If the defense secures a stop with time left, they are encouraged to run out in transition for a score, but the offense regains possession with the remaining time after the runout.

Coaching Points

Emphasize defensive communication, discipline, and staying connected on every action. Demand focus on rebounding, contesting without fouling, and executing your defensive principles under pressure. Encourage the defense to treat this drill as a late-clock situation, where one breakdown can undo an entire possession.

Variations

Coaches can dictate specific offensive sets or situations to simulate late-game scenarios. You can also apply restrictions like requiring the offense to finish with a ball screen, a post touch, or a particular entry to test defensive preparation. Progress by adding a 14-second clock to simulate short possessions or by giving the offense additional weapons such as one-dribble penetration or specific spacing concepts.
