PLAY DESCRIPTION

Overview
Chips is a baseline out-of-bounds set against man-to-man defense. It starts with a simple entry to the elbow and flows into a screen-the-screener action that produces both a perimeter and an interior scoring threat.

Why it works
The initial curl forces a potential switch and sets up the screen-the-screener sequence. This layered action challenges defensive communication, often leaving a shooter open on the wing or a big sealing inside after a switch.

Teaching Points

  • Timing is critical—each cut sets up the next action.

  • 2 must set a solid screen for the inbounder to sell the first option.

  • 5 must sprint into the screen to create maximum pressure on the defense.

  • 4 must be patient and read all three scoring options.

Variations
If the defense switches, look for 5 to seal inside for a mismatch. 2 can also slip the screen if his defender anticipates the pop to the wing.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • 4 flashes to the elbow and receives the inbound pass from 3.

  • 2 sets a guard-to-wing screen for 3; 3 curls to the rim (first look).

  • 5 sprints in from the corner to screen for 2 (screen-the-screener action).

  • 2 pops to the deep wing for a shot; 5 can seal or slip to the rim.

  • 3 clears to opposite corner, 1 lifts to opposite slot for spacing.
