PLAY DESCRIPTION

Quick Overview
Box Ram creates a clear-side ball screen between 1 and 5 by layering multiple screening actions that occupy help defenders. The result is a spread floor where 1 can attack downhill, with options inside or outside.

Why It Works
The initial up screen, weak-side corner clear, and cross screen disguise the intent and free 5 to arrive in rhythm for the empty-side PnR. With the baseline corner cleared, the defense has no easy help, forcing tough choices between protecting the rim or guarding shooters.

Key Teaching Points

  • 1 must attack off the up screen with pace to shift the defense.

  • 2 must sprint to the weak corner to empty the side.

  • 5 must roll hard out of the empty-side ball screen.

  • 4 must screen with purpose, then look for the slip if his man helps.

  • Spacing is non-negotiable — keep 2 and 3 ready to shoot.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • Box alignment: 5 left elbow, 4 right elbow, 3 left block, 2 right block, 1 top.

  • 4 sets an up screen for 1, who dribbles to the right wing.

  • 2 sprints off a screen from 3 to the left corner.

  • 4 turns and sets a cross screen for 5, who sprints into a ball screen for 1 on the right wing.

  • 4 then sets a pin down for 3, who pops to the top of the key.

  • Reads: 1–5 PnR (lob or roll), kick-out to 3, corner 3 for 2, or 4 slip.
