PLAY DESCRIPTION

Quick Overview
A quick-hitting zone set from a 1-2-2 alignment that uses a ball screen and weak-side movement to overload the defense and isolate the bottom and middle zone defenders.

Why It Works
The defense is forced into tough choices by positioning offensive players between zone defenders. The ball screen on the top defender creates downhill momentum while the weak side is emptied and then refilled, producing multiple open looks. The result is a natural 4-on-2 advantage with options to score inside, from the short corner, or from the corner three.

Key Teaching Points

  • Off-ball players must position themselves between defenders to create confusion and space.

  • Timing of the drift cuts (3 and 5) is crucial to isolate the bottom and middle defenders.

  • 1 must come hard off the ball screen with purpose to force the zone to collapse.

  • Players 3 and 5 need to be decisive — corner spacing for 3 and short-corner timing for 5 are the pressure points.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • 1 passes to 2 on the left wing, then immediately receives the ball back.

  • On the catch, 4 sprints up from the right short corner to set a ball screen on the outside top defender.

  • 3 drifts from the right wing to the right baseline corner to occupy the low defender.

  • 5 sneaks from the left short corner across the baseline to the right short corner, sealing the middle defender.

  • 1 comes off the ball screen attacking the gap, forcing the bottom right defender to choose between stopping the drive or staying home on 3.

  • 4, after screening, slides into the middle of the paint just below the foul line to give 1 a bailout option.

  • The result is a four-way read: layup for 1, corner three for 3, dump pass to 5 sealing inside, or short jumper/dump to 4 in the paint.
