Setup and Organization
Split the team into two groups and run this drill on both ends for competition. On each end, place one player on the left wing, one on the right wing (both extended beyond the arc), and one in the right baseline corner. The remaining players start under the basket, each with a ball. The first player under the rim begins the action by passing to the left wing and immediately sprinting to close out. After the closeout, he fills that wing line. The drill becomes continuous as players rotate through each position after every rep.
Step-by-Step Progression
1. The first player under the rim passes to the left wing and closes out hard, then follows to fill the left-wing line.
2. The left-wing player catches, drives middle, and kicks the ball to the right baseline corner.
3. The corner player makes one more (“extra”) pass to the right wing for a rhythm shot.
4. The shooter follows the shot to rebound and outlets the ball to the next player under the basket.
5. Everyone rotates: passer to wing, wing to corner, corner to right wing, right wing to rebound and outlet.
Progressions
• Start with a middle drive → baseline kick → extra pass to wing for a three.
• Progress to a middle drive → wing kick → extra pass to corner.
• Add a baseline drive → baseline kick → extra pass to wing.
• Final variation: baseline drive → 45° cut → pass to cutter → extra pass to corner for a three.
Scoring
Threes = 3 points, twos = 2 points, misses = −1. No layups allowed. Play to 15 points or most points after four minutes. Run as a team competition on both ends to keep energy and focus high.
Coaching Points
Emphasize game-speed drives and balance on the extra pass. Closeouts should be controlled with high hands, and all drives must attack middle or baseline with purpose. Stress footwork—catch, pivot, and pass in rhythm—and demand strong communication on every “one more” pass. Keep tempo fast and spacing wide.
Variations
Allow the extra-pass shooter to shot-fake and take one dribble into a pull-up. Add defenders on the closeout or in help position to make reads more realistic. You can also add a time or score goal for each segment to increase competitiveness and pace.
