WELCOME TO THEHOOPSCOACH.COM - A GLOBAL BASKETBALL COACHING COMMUNITY
Setup and Organization
Run this team shooting drill with groups of three players per basket. Each group has one designated shooter, one passer, and one rebounder. Both the passer and rebounder start with a ball. The first round begins with 30 seconds on the clock. The shooter works from the short corner to the elbow area on one side of the floor, receiving on-time, on-target passes from the passer. After each pass, the passer receives a pass from the rebounder, who then collects the shooter’s rebound. The drill continues continuously for 30 seconds before rotating roles — the passer becomes the shooter, the shooter becomes the rebounder, and the rebounder becomes the passer. Each player shoots once from each spot before moving to the next location.
Step-by-Step Progression
1. Form groups of three at each basket — one shooter, one passer, and one rebounder (both passer and rebounder start with a ball).
2. Set the clock for 30 seconds. The shooter moves back and forth between the short corner and elbow, catching and shooting in rhythm from the passer.
3. The rebounder retrieves every shot and passes back to the passer immediately to keep rhythm continuous.
4. After 30 seconds, the coach calls “Switch,” and players rotate roles within the group.
5. Once all three players have completed their 30-second window at one spot, the group shifts to the next area (elbow to elbow, opposite elbow to short corner, etc.).
6. After mid-range sequences, return and repeat the circuit from beyond the three-point line (corner-to-slot, slot-to-slot, slot-to-corner).
Scoring
Count makes as a running team total. The first shooter’s made shots establish the starting score, and each new shooter adds to the total. However, if any player misses three consecutive shots, the team’s cumulative score resets to zero. The group with the highest score at the end of the full sequence wins the drill.
Coaching Points
Emphasize tempo, crisp passing, and consistent footwork. Shooters should step into every shot balanced and in rhythm. Passers must deliver the ball to the shooting pocket—no wasted motion. Rebounders must stay active, ready to feed the next pass immediately. Encourage communication throughout: passers and shooters should call names on every exchange to simulate in-game connection. This is a high-tempo competition—keep transitions quick and energy high.
Variations
Alternate between mid-range and three-point shooting rounds, or switch sides after each rotation to balance the floor. Add a “bonus round” from the top of the key or corners. For more pressure, reduce the miss limit to two or increase the time per round to 45 seconds. You can also make it cumulative by adding all makes across both mid-range and three-point sequences.
