PLAY DESCRIPTION

Chin Reverse starts with a familiar DHO entry from secondary break spacing, immediately flips the floor with a diagonal rip cut, and then reverses into a flare decoy that seamlessly flows into a speed ball screen. The ball changes sides early, forcing the defense to guard multiple actions before it can settle.

Why It Works

The play attacks the defense before it’s fully matched up. The initial DHO and diagonal rip punish ball watching, often producing a layup. If that’s taken away, the flare-back-screen sequence occupies help defenders and disguises the real intent — a speed ball screen with momentum. Because the ball reverses and the actions change sides quickly, help rotations arrive late and coverage communication breaks down.

Key Teaching Points

The DHO and slot pass must happen bang-bang to prevent switches.
1’s diagonal rip screen must be tight and physical to free 2 to the rim.
4 must read the rip first — that layup is the earliest and best look.
The flare action is a decoy; sell it to force help and switches.
3 must attack the speed ball screen downhill with no hesitation.
Spacing from 1, 2, and 4 is critical to open passing windows.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • Secondary break alignment: 1 right slot (ball), 2 right corner, 4 left slot, 3 left corner, 5 ball-side low post.

  • 2 lifts from the corner to receive a handoff from 1; 1 replaces to the corner.

  • Immediately, 2 hits 4 in the left slot.

  • As the pass is made, 1 steps in to set a diagonal rip screen for 2.

  • 2 cuts hard across the paint to the left low post/logo area.

  • First read: 4 hits 2 for a layup.

  • If not available, 4 passes to 3, who lifts from the left corner to the left wing; 2 fills the left corner.

  • 1 drifts to the right corner for spacing.

  • On the catch, 5 lifts to the top and sets a wide back screen for 4, who flares to the right slot (decoy).

  • Immediately, 5 turns and sets a speed ball screen for 3 in the left slot.

  • 3 attacks downhill; 5 rim runs; 2 lifts behind; kick-outs available to 1 or 4.
