PLAY DESCRIPTION

Setup and Organization

Run this one-on-one drill on both ends to maximize reps. Place three cones along the baseline: one on the split line, and one just outside each lane line. A coach stands at the top of the key (two steps beyond the three-point line) with a basketball. Two players start in the left and right slot positions outside the arc. The coach will call either “Left” or “Right” to start the action. If “Left” is called, the player on the left sprints down, circles the outside cone from the inside out, and flies back up to the wing for a pass. The opposite player circles the middle cone and becomes the defender, closing out on the catch to initiate a live one-on-one. The setup is mirrored if “Right” is called. Score individually by defensive stops.

Step-by-Step Progression

1. Coach calls “Left” or “Right” and the corresponding offensive player sprints to the baseline, around their cone, and cuts up to the wing.
2. The opposite player circles the middle cone and becomes the defender, sprinting into a live closeout.
3. The coach delivers a pass to the offensive player as he reaches the wing.
4. Play live one-on-one from the catch with a two-dribble limit (or per your rules).
5. After the possession, both players reset, alternating sides or cones as needed for balanced reps.

Scoring

Score individually: each defensive stop = 1 point. A foul or offensive rebound allowed resets the defender’s score to 0. To add difficulty, count any paint touch as a score for the offense. Run the drill so every player gets the same number of defensive reps.

Coaching Points

Defender must close out under control with high hands, active feet, and balance. Emphasize staying low, forcing the ball to the sideline or weak hand, and contesting without fouling. Offensive players should catch ready to attack—no wasted movement. Encourage game-speed intensity and communication from both players.

Variations

Move the cones to different locations (e.g., corner, slot, or 45° angle) to simulate varied catch-and-closeout angles. Adjust the dribble limit, or call “No Paint” to make the defense protect space more aggressively. You can also track cumulative stops or wins per round for competitive scoring.
