PLAY DESCRIPTION

Setup and Organization

Players work in groups of three at each basket with two basketballs. Player 2 starts at the top of the key with a ball, Player 3 begins under the rim with a ball, and Player 1 starts off-ball in the short corner or half-court area. The drill is run continuously for four minutes to maximize game-speed shooting reps.

Step-by-Step Progression

1. Player 1 cuts to an open spot outside the paint with active feet and hands ready to receive. Player 2 passes to Player 1 for a catch-and-shoot attempt. Player 1 shoots, then rebounds his own shot.
2. As soon as Player 2 passes, he immediately becomes the next cutter, sprinting to an open spot where he will receive a pass from Player 3. He shoots and rebounds his own ball.
3. After passing to Player 2, Player 3 becomes the cutter. Player 1, now with the ball, delivers the pass. Player 3 shoots, rebounds, and the cycle continues.
4. The drill flows in a continuous loop for four minutes, ensuring constant action, cutting, passing, and shooting for all three players.

Scoring

Scoring is kept individually within each group. Made three-pointers are worth 3 points, made mid-range shots are worth 2 points, and a miss is -3 points. The player with the highest score after four minutes wins the drill for their group.

Coaching Points

Emphasize hard, purposeful cuts with active footwork to get into rhythm. Every pass must be on time, on target, and lead the shooter into their shot. Reinforce vocal communication—passers call the name of the shooter, and shooters call for the ball with their target hand shown. Teach players to follow their shot aggressively to rebound and reset quickly.

Variations

Limit shots to specific ranges (all threes, all mid-range, or only one-dribble pull-ups). You can also add time challenges, such as reaching a certain point total before the clock expires, or introduce shot-fake rules where players must mix in a pull-up jumper after the catch.
