2-on-0 DHO Timing and Weak Side Wing is a progression drill that expands on our basic dribble handoff action. It builds timing, spacing, and automatic weak-side movement while reinforcing our offensive principles of lift, drift, and extra pass. The drill begins with a slot-to-wing dribble handoff (with a backdoor option) and progresses into a three-man action by adding a weak-side wing lifting from the corner. The goal is sharp execution of the DHO, decisive reads, and spacing that creates clean passing windows.
Setup & Organization
Use a half court. Form three lines at half court: one line on the right side of the circle (ball handlers), one line near the right sideline (wings), and one line on the far left sideline (weak-side wings). Every player has a ball except the first wing, who will receive the initial DHO. The first ball handler dribbles into the right slot, while the wing sprints to the baseline corner and lifts hard to foul-line extended. The weak-side wing runs to the baseline corner opposite.
Step-by-Step Progression
The ball handler drives to the slot, attacks the elbow, then comes back out with a retreat dribble. As the wing lifts two steps outside the arc, the ball handler dribbles at him. If the defense is denying, the wing cuts backdoor for a bounce pass and finish. Otherwise, they execute the DHO. The wing takes the handoff, attacks the paint with two feet, and then kicks to the weak-side corner. The weak-side wing catches and either shoots immediately or attacks baseline, applying our drift-and-lift principles. After passing, the original wing re-spaces up to the top, and the ball handler fills the opposite wing, keeping three-man spacing intact. Depending on the coach’s call, one or two extra passes may be added before a shot is taken.
Scoring
Normal twos and threes. No paint finishes are allowed outside of backdoor cuts. Run for four minutes, aiming for 25–30 team points. A miss deducts three points to stress precision. Each rep should result in a clean shot within three passes or less.
Coaching Points
Handoff timing is non-negotiable: ball handler attacks downhill first, then dribbles at the wing for the exchange. Wing must lift hard, show hands, and make a clear decision: backdoor or DHO. The weak-side wing must sprint into the corner early to stretch the defense and be shot-ready. Every pass must be off two feet, on time, and on target. Teach players to re-space immediately after the pass so the floor always stays balanced. Emphasize that this drill connects directly to our flow offense spacing rules.
Variations
Alternate sides of the floor. Require the weak-side corner player to make a one-more pass to the top before a shot. Add a guided defender to disrupt the DHO and force the wing to backdoor more aggressively. For advanced groups, add a shot-fake-into-drive option from the weak-side corner. You can also run three continuous shots per rep to increase conditioning and pace.
