Transition Defense

Why Transition Defense Matters
The fastest way to lose games is to give up easy points before your defense is set. Transition defense is the first pillar of our identity — no possessions off, no excuses. If we can sprint back, build the wall, and force contested shots, we dictate the tempo and take away the opponent’s easiest scoring opportunities.

Core Rules of Transition Defense

  • All 5 Sprint: Everyone runs. No jogs, no spectators.

  • Build the Wall: Protect the paint first. Stop rim runs.

  • Stop the Ball (without fouling): First defender back contains.

  • Communicate & Organize: Point and talk until matchups are sorted.

Individual Responsibilities

  • Ball Stopper: Usually the guard closest to the top when the shot goes up. First back. Picks up the ball around half court, keeps the play in front, and buys time for teammates.

  • Safety: Second player back. Protects the rim first, then helps on penetration.

  • Wall Builders: Remaining players sprint into the paint, shoulder-to-shoulder. Eliminate driving lanes and force kick-outs.

  • Talkers: Trailers quarterback the coverage. They have the best view of the floor and must direct teammates with early, specific calls.

Scramble & Closeouts
Even with the wall built, transition creates mismatches. That’s fine — mismatches don’t beat us, but open shots do.

  • No Matchups in Transition: Guard whoever is closest. Protect the rim, stop the ball, contest shots. Sort out assignments later.

  • Closeouts: Short, controlled closeouts. Two-thirds sprint, one-third chop steps, two high hands.

  • DOC (Dead on Catch): Arrive on the catch, never late.

  • Contain Drives: Force east–west, never north–south. All drives flow into our help.
