INSIDE THE BOOK

Season Planning: Align Vision with Action

Season planning is the big-picture blueprint of your year. It’s where your mission meets the calendar. It allows you to move from reactive coaching to proactive leadership. Rather than scrambling to adjust to the week ahead, you operate from a clear framework that ties every phase of the year back to your team identity.

Start by dividing your season into four phases: Off-Season, Pre-Season, In-Season, and Post-Season. Each phase serves a distinct purpose.

  • Off-Season is about development—physical, mental, and technical. It builds the base.

  • Pre-Season is about installing your system, defining roles, and building a solid foundation.

  • In-Season is about refinement, developing winning habits, adjustments, and competition.

  • Post-Season is about reflection and redesign.

The better you define the goals of each, the more intentional your practices and meetings become.

Effective season planning also involves milestone setting. Plan everything. Taper conditioning around midterms. Set emotional goals for rivalry weeks. Identify potential leadership shifts. Align these decisions with academic calendars, travel fatigue, and player leadership arcs.

Coach’s Tip: Print your full season calendar and post it in your office and locker room. Keep the “why” in front of everyone.
