21 Double Drag is highly effective because of its simplicity and spacing. The combination of two staggered ball screens, one dive and one pop, forces multiple defenders into tough coverages while keeping the floor spread for maximum pressure on the rim and perimeter.
Why It Works
The back-to-back ball screens put the on-ball defender under constant pressure, while the roller and popper stretch both the rim protector and help coverage. With the corner occupied, the defense cannot load up, leaving clean reads for the ball handler.
Key Teaching Points
2 must attack the double drag with pace to force defensive rotation.
5 must sprint into the first screen and roll hard to the rim.
4 must trail into the second screen, then pop for spacing.
1 must cut hard through to the corner to balance the floor.
Spacing is critical: 3 must stay disciplined in the corner to hold his defender.
Primary Actions
Setup: 1 top with ball, 2 left wing, 3 right corner, 5 left elbow, 4 right elbow.
1 passes to 2 on the wing, then cuts through to the left corner.
5 sprints into the first ball screen for 2, rolling to the rim.
4 follows into the second screen, popping out after contact.
2 attacks downhill with options: finish, hit 5 rolling, or kick to 4 popping.
Spacing: 1 left corner, 3 right corner, ensuring no help can collapse.
