CORE ACTIONS

PLAY DESCRIPTION

With all four offensive players cutting simultaneously, the zone must react in multiple directions at once. The defense is forced to cover both corners and the middle, leaving the low block exposed for a high catch or tip finish. The simplicity makes it nearly impossible to switch or anticipate—ideal for a game-winner with almost no time left.

Why It Works
The action leverages two principles: simultaneous cutting and zone displacement. By pulling both outside defenders to opposite corners and sealing the middle defender, the play creates a two-man overload at the rim. The middle defender cannot protect both the dive and the block, so the inbound pass becomes a direct scoring read.

Key Teaching Points

  • Cuts must be explosive and perfectly timed—all four players move at once.

  • 4 must seal inside, not look for space; their job is to screen the middle defender.

  • 5 must dive late and tight to the rim after 4 seals.

  • The inbound must be a high, catch-and-finish pass, not a bounce or low entry.

  • Do not wait to read—this is a one-touch or tip finish play.

Primary Actions

  • Alignment: 2 inbounding (left baseline), 4 ball-side short corner, 5 ball-side elbow, 3 ball-side wing (Foul line extended), 1 opposite wing (Foul line extended).

  • On the whistle, all four non-inbounders cut simultaneously:

    • 1 sprints to the weak-side baseline corner, pulling the outside zone defender.

    • 3 sprints to the strong-side baseline corner, pulling the other outside zone defender.

    • 4 dives straight into the paint, sealing the middle defender at the rim.

    • 5 dives immediately after 4, running to the strong-side block for a catch-and-score.

  • Option 1: lob or high pass to 4 sealing the middle defender.

  • Option 2: pass to 5 diving to the block for a rim finish.

  • Secondary (rare): If defenders collapse, skip to 1 or 3 for a corner three.
