Quick Overview
“42 Out” manipulates the defense with a dribble handoff, a ball screen, and a back screen action to spring a shooter to the baseline corner. By blending zone overload principles with man-to-man screening actions, it guarantees a clean look when you need a three late in the game.
Why It Works
The action confuses defenses by combining multiple layers: a handoff, a top ball screen, and a hammer-style baseline screen. Against zone, it overloads and forces poor closeouts. Against man, it creates tough switching decisions and opens either a shooter or a slipping big for a layup.
Key Teaching Points
The timing of the handoff into the ball screen must be sharp — no delays.
2 must cut hard through the paint to disguise the corner sprint.
5’s baseline screen is critical: it must seal the low defender.
On the kickback, 4 should be ready to snap the skip pass quickly before the zone can recover.
Alignment: 1 top, 2 left wing, 3 right wing, 5 left block, 4 right block.
1 dribbles left and passes to 2, then follows into a handoff.
After the handoff, 1 keeps the ball on the left wing.
2 cuts across the foul line through the paint.
4 shifts up from the right block to set a ball screen on the top defender for 1.
1 comes off the screen toward the foul line while 4 pops out to the left wing.
1 kicks back to 4, drawing both top and wing defenders.
2 sprints out to the left corner while 5 sets a screen on the low defender.
4 skips to 2 for a wide-open corner three.
Secondary option: 5 slips the screen for a quick layup.
