Quick Overview
This play uses an overload setup followed by a hammer screen on the baseline defender to free a shooter sprinting into the corner. By shifting the zone with multiple decoy cuts and then screening the low defender from behind, it creates one of the toughest shots to defend against a zone: the baseline corner three.
Why It Works
Modern zones are designed to protect the arc, but a hammer action attacks the blind side of the defense where help cannot rotate quickly. The zone is manipulated into overloading one side before the ball is reversed and skipped over the top for a corner 3.
Key Teaching Points
Timing is critical: the hammer screen must be set as the pass is made.
Shooter (3) must sprint into the corner with urgency — no jogging.
Ball movement should sell the overload first before the reversal.
5 must commit to sealing the low defender; the success of the play depends on the hammer screen.
Alignment: 1 left slot, 2 right slot, 3 left wing, 4 right wing, 5 left low block.
1 passes to 3 on the left wing and stays put.
On the catch, 2 stretches wide to the right wing while 4 dives to the left elbow, occupying the top of the zone.
3 passes back to 1, forcing the zone to shift.
1 dribbles to the right wing as 4 pops up to the left slot to replace.
5 sets a hammer back screen on the left low zone defender.
3 sprints from the wing into the left corner.
4 skips the ball to 3 for a catch-and-shoot corner three.
