Overview
Box STS is a staple baseline out-of-bounds play against man-to-man defense, run out of a box alignment. The design uses a simple screen-the-screener action to generate a clean perimeter shot or a layup at the rim.
Why it works
The initial cross screen sets up the inside option and forces the defense to switch or fight through traffic. The second screen immediately flips pressure onto the screener’s defender, freeing the shooter for a wide-open look or creating a mismatch inside.
Teaching Points
2 must set a solid, physical cross screen for 4.
4 must cut hard to the rim, ready for the pass.
5 must set a headhunting screen for 2, punishing the defender.
2 must sprint into the catch, feet and hands ready.
Variations
5 can slip to the rim if defenders switch the STS action. If the three is denied, 2 can immediately look inside to 5 sealing his man.
From box alignment, 2 cross-screens for 4; 4 dives to rim (first look).
4 clears to weakside corner if no pass.
5 sets screen-the-screener for 2.
2 sprints to wing for open three.
5 slips or seals inside based on defense.
1 inbounds to 2, then clears to opposite corner; 4 lifts to opposite elbow.
