Overview
Drop is a baseline out-of-bounds play designed to create a simple but effective isolation for a forward in the short corner. The alignment and spacing disguise the action, while the screening triggers a switch that sets up a favorable matchup.
Why it works
Defenses often switch the baseline in-screen, leaving a forward isolated against a smaller guard. With good spacing around the floor, the forward has room to attack one-on-one, making the read simple and execution efficient.
Teaching Points
2 must set a strong rub screen to trigger the switch.
4 should curl tight into the short corner, ready to attack immediately.
3 must deliver a clean pass and then clear space.
Spacing from 1, 2, and 5 is critical to keep the lane open.
Variations
The inbounder (3) can use a dribble handoff with 4 after the entry to disguise the isolation, or 4 can face up immediately and attack.
2 sets a baseline rub screen for 4.
4 curls into the short corner and receives the pass from 3.
5 lifts from opposite block to the top of the key.
1 lifts from opposite corner into opposite slot.
2 clears to opposite baseline corner after screen.
4 isolates in the short corner with space to attack.
