Quick Overview
Elbow Double Rip disguises its true intent with a high-post entry and dribble handoff, then flows into a double rip screen that is nearly impossible to switch without creating a mismatch. It’s perfect after a timeout or in a late-game situation when you need a high-percentage look.
Why It Works
The action empties the strong-side corner, creating space for the DHO drive. The double rip screen forces the defense into a tough decision: fight through and likely give up a layup, or switch and leave a guard defending a big at the rim. Either outcome heavily favors the offense.
Key Teaching Points
1 must cut hard off the high-post entry to sell the initial handoff.
2 must set up his cut to use the cross screen and flow seamlessly into the DHO.
4 must screen with force, then sprint into the rip action.
The double rip must be physical — 1 and 3 must commit to holding the defender.
Timing matters: 4 should hit the rim just as 2 comes off the DHO.
Setup: 1 top of the key with the ball, 5 right elbow, 4 left elbow, 3 right short corner, 2 left wing.
1 enters the ball to 5 at the high post, then cuts off him hard.
3 lifts from the short corner to the left mid-post to clear space.
4 sets a cross screen for 2, who cuts into a dribble handoff with 5 on the right side.
2 takes the DHO from 5 and drives the empty side.
Simultaneously, 1 and 3 set a double rip screen for 4, who cuts diagonally to the front of the rim.
Reads: 2 drives or looks inside to 4 on the rip cut. If covered, 1 and 3 lift to top/wing for spacing and reversal.
