PLAY DESCRIPTION

Overview
Elbow Rub is a man-to-man half-court set built around back and flare screens. The play starts with disguised movement, then flows into a rim-cut option off a back screen before finishing with a flare screen into a drive-and-kick or perimeter shot.

Why it works
The layered actions occupy defenders on multiple levels. The back screen creates an early rim threat, while the flare screen opens space on the perimeter. Even if the first two looks are denied, the play naturally flows into a drive from the elbow with multiple kick-out options.

Teaching Points

  • 3 must set a strong back screen for 1, then pop to disguise the action.

  • 5’s back screen for 2 must be physical to free the rim cut.

  • Timing of the flare screen is critical to keep 3 open.

  • 1 must be patient, driving to the elbow to force help before skipping.

Variations
If 2 is not open on the back screen, 5 can slip for an easy catch. If the flare is covered, 3 can backcut or immediately drive off the catch.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • 1 passes or dribbles to 2; 3 sets back screen for 1, who clears to corner.

  • 3 pops to slot; 2 passes to 3.

  • 5 sets back screen for 2; 2 cuts to rim (first option).

  • 2 clears to corner if no pass; 5 sets flare screen for 3.

  • 3 comes off flare into left slot; 1 drives to elbow and skips to 3.

  • 3 can shoot, drive, or kick to 4 in the corner.
