Quick Overview
Horn’s Chicago Rip layers multiple difficult-to-guard actions: cross screen, fake handoff, pin down, DHO, and finally a rip screen. The sequencing disguises the true goal — freeing 4 for a layup at the rim — while the secondary screen-the-screener action produces an open three if the defense collapses.
Why It Works
The misdirection keeps the defense chasing: the cross screen is a decoy, the fake handoff sells action, and the Chicago DHO blends into a Spain-style rip screen. The corner clear and spacing by 5 leave the paint open for 4’s cut, making the layup nearly automatic.
Key Teaching Points
4 must screen hard, then pop with pace to keep the defense engaged.
1’s fake handoff must sell the action before flowing into the corner pin down.
2 must sprint into the rip screen and hold it long enough to free 4.
3 must turn the corner aggressively on the DHO to make the defense commit.
5 must space wide to create a clean passing lane into the rip action.
Alignment: Horns set — 1 top, 4 right elbow, 5 left elbow, 2 right corner, 3 left corner.
4 sets a cross screen for 5, who cuts into the right slot (decoy).
4 then pops out to the left elbow for a pass from 1.
2 cuts from the right corner into the paint to clear.
1 fakes a handoff with 4, then cuts to the left corner to set a pin down for 3.
3 comes off the pin down into a DHO with 4, while 5 spaces to the right wing.
2 sets a rip screen for 4, who cuts to the front of the rim.
3 hits 5 on the wing, who looks inside to 4.
Secondary option: after the DHO, 3 sets a pin down for 2 (who just screened), freeing him at the top for a three.
