Overview
Low Stack is a baseline out-of-bounds play designed to create a clean catch-and-shoot three against any zone defense. Built around simultaneous cutting actions and multiple screening layers, it’s an ideal late-game option when you need a quick strike from your best shooter.
Why it works
The opening cuts occupy every level of the zone, forcing defenders to chase in different directions. The disguised cut from the inbounder, combined with back-to-back screens inside the zone, produces a clear window for a catch-and-shoot three on the wing.
Teaching Points
All players must cut hard to occupy defenders and confuse responsibilities.
The inbounder must sell the inside cut before breaking out to the perimeter.
4 must screen the middle defender firmly to set up the shooter’s lane.
2 must use a dribble attack toward the elbow to pull the top of the zone.
Variations
If the defense takes away the three, 4’s dive to the rim can be an immediate scoring option. 5 can also slip the screen for a short corner catch.
5 cuts to ball-side corner; 3 dives to rim, then clears to opposite corner.
2 lifts hard to top of key; 4 dive-cuts to rim (first look).
1 (inbounder/shooter) passes to 2, then fakes rim cut to set up screen action.
4 screens middle zone defender; 5 screens baseline defender.
1 cuts off double screens to wing for catch-and-shoot three.
2 dribble penetrates to elbow, kicks out to 1 for the shot.
