“Miami Quick” blends guard-to-guard and big-to-big screening sequences to create confusion through timing and movement. It flows naturally from transition or secondary break spacing, using flare and ball screen actions on opposite sides to produce either a wide-open three or a downhill rim finish.
Why It Works
The defense is pulled in multiple directions by consecutive flare and ball screen actions. The shifting angles force poor switches or late rotations, freeing the shooter on the weak side while the screener slips into open space. The flow keeps defenders guessing and removes help coverage from the rim.
Key Teaching Points
The guard-to-guard screen must be set firmly — it’s the trigger for the full sequence.
Timing between 4’s flare for 2 and 4’s follow-up ball screen for 1 is essential.
5’s role alternates between screening and rim-running — commitment to the roll sells the play.
2 must drift wide off the flare and hold spacing — do not shorten the angle.
Alignment: 1 left slot, 2 left wing, 5 right slot (trailer), 4 right dunker, 3 right baseline corner.
1 drives at 2 for a guard-to-guard ball screen; 2 screens for 1 and lifts slightly.
Simultaneously, 5 pins down for 4, who pops to the right elbow.
4 then sets a flare screen for 2, who drifts to the top of the key.
4 follows immediately into a ball screen for 1 on the left wing and pops afterward.
5 sets a second flare screen for 2, who now drifts to the right wing.
5 then rolls hard to the rim (rim-run).
Reads: 1 can hit 2 (primary option) for a catch-and-shoot three, hit 4 popping after the ball screen, or find 5 on the roll for a layup.
