“Raptor STS” uses layered screening and misdirection to confuse the defense when they expect a quick catch-and-shoot. The decoy action sends your best shooter off a curl while the real scoring option comes from a perfectly timed back screen that frees the screener for a lob. It’s ideal when time is low and only a tip or lob can win it.
Why It Works
The defense naturally locks onto the shooter curling to space, especially out of a screen-to-screener look. This misdirection opens up the screener — usually a big — for a lob behind the defense. With pressure on the inbounder and less than a second to react, it’s nearly impossible to guard both options.
Key Teaching Points
The inbounder (4) must be a confident, accurate passer — ideally tall.
Timing between 2’s curl and 3’s back screen must be synchronized.
5 must explode to the rim immediately after setting the cross screen.
3’s back screen must be physical to prevent switches.
Sell the shot for 2 — that’s what makes the lob available.
Alignment: 4 inbounding on the sideline, 1 in right slot, 2 top of key (shooter), 5 left elbow, 3 right wing near sideline.
1 sprints diagonally toward half-court to lift his defender.
5 sets a cross screen for 2, who curls to the left wing for a potential catch-and-shoot three (decoy).
As 2 curls, 3 sprints in from the right wing and sets a back screen for 5.
5 immediately dives to the rim for the lob.
4 inbounder reads: first look = lob to 5, second look = 2 on the wing for three.
