Sideline Break into DHO

An example of how a sideline break concept can flow directly into a secondary offense entry – in this case a dribble handoff, designed to create quick action and multiple scoring options against man-to-man defense.

OFFENSE

Secondary Break

FORMATION

4-Out 1-In

CORE ACTIONS

Ball Screen / PnR, Dribble Handoff (DHO)

PLAY DESCRIPTION

Overview:

Transition action that flows directly from defensive rebound into secondary offense, using a sideline push, early rim run, and dribble handoff into a drag screen.

Why It Works
The quick outlet and sideline advance stress the defense before it’s set, while 5’s rim sprint forces the middle defender to retreat. If the pitch-ahead isn’t available, the trail DHO and drag screen create natural flow into half-court actions without resetting.

Key Teaching Points

  • All five must box out — the break starts with a secured rebound.

  • 1 must “banana cut” in front of the rebounder to ensure a clean outlet.

  • 5 must sprint rim-to-rim every time, even if he doesn’t get the ball.

  • Wings (2 and 3) must run wide lanes to the corners to stretch the floor.

  • The DHO must be tight to the sideline with 5 arriving immediately into a drag.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • Defense secures rebound (example: 4).

  • 5 sprints down the floor straight to the rim.

  • 2 and 3 fill the sideline lanes wide to the corners.

  • 1 banana cuts across 4 for the outlet and pushes up the sideline.

  • If available, 1 pitches ahead to 3 for an early scoring chance or post feed to 5.

  • If denied, 4 trails to the opposite slot.

  • Ball is reversed to 4, who dribbles into a handoff with 3 on the wing.

  • 5 flows into a drag screen for 3, leading into the team’s regular secondary offense.
