“Wheel” is a beautifully layered SLOB that combines stagger screens and a screen-the-screener sequence to deliver two elite late-game looks: a clean catch-and-shoot three or a lob at the rim. Its continuous movement and stacked alignment force defensive switches, miscommunication, and late help rotations — the perfect formula when the game’s on the line.
Why It Works
The stacked formation disguises the action while maximizing chaos for defenders trying to communicate switches under time pressure. As the defense follows the shooter through a stagger, the screener becomes the next scoring threat via a back screen and rim dive. Two scoring options emerge naturally from one flow.
Key Teaching Points
Timing and spacing are everything — each cut must flow seamlessly.
One (shooter) must sprint hard off the stagger; no hesitation.
Four’s pin down and subsequent back screen for five must be physical.
Three (inbounder) must read both options quickly — shot or lob.
Encourage players to sell each movement to pull defenders out of position.
Alignment: 3 inbounding above the foul line extended, stack formation between the elbows — 5 (closest), 4, 2, and 1 (furthest).
3 curls around 4 and 5 to the ball-side corner to clear space.
1 curls behind 2, looping around 4 and 5 into the center of the paint.
4 drops down to set a pin down for 1, with 5 looping around 4 to form a stagger.
1 sprints off both screens to the top of the key for a potential catch-and-shoot three.
As 1 clears, 4 immediately turns and screens for 5 (screen-the-screener action).
5 dives hard to the rim for a lob.
3 reads: first look = 1 for three, second look = 5 for lob.
