PLAY DESCRIPTION

Overview: Wing Rip is a simple, effective ATO action that starts with a wing entry and immediately flows into a rip screen. The cutter uses the screen to dive hard toward the basket, while the defense is occupied by the ball movement on the perimeter.

Why It Works
2 acts as the decoy — selling himself as a shooter by first cross screening and then immediately sprinting into a rip screen. This shifts defensive focus, leaving 4 to cut cleanly to the rim. If the defense collapses, the screen-the-screener action frees 2 on the perimeter for a high-quality shot.

Key Teaching Points

  • 2 must sprint from the first screen directly into the rip screen without pausing.

  • 4 must read the back screen and cut aggressively to the front of the rim.

  • 3’s catch must be ready to deliver the layup pass on time.

  • 5’s screen for 2 must be solid to punish defensive overhelp.

PRIMARY ACTIONS

  • 1 starts with the ball on the left wing. 2 is in the ball-side short corner, 3 in the weak short corner, 5 on the ball-side elbow, and 4 on the weak elbow.

  • 2 sets a cross screen for 3, who cuts to the ball-side corner and receives from 1.

  • Immediately, 2 sprints into a rip (back) screen for 4.

  • 4 cuts to the front of the rim for the primary option: a layup pass from 3.

  • If denied, 5 sets a down screen for 2 (screen-the-screener).

  • 2 pops to the top of the key for the secondary option: a catch-and-shoot three.
